Hello, my name is Miss Dobie, and I am the class teacher for Chestnut Class. We are a Year 5 class, and I am delighted to be working alongside Miss Little, our Teaching Assistant. Mrs Calderbank also works in Chestnut Class for part of each day, supporting the children with their learning.

We have an exciting year of learning ahead, with lots of fascinating topics and experiences planned across the curriculum. In History, we will explore the Anglo-Saxons, while in Science we will be learning all about space. In Design and Technology, we will design and create our own pop-up books, and in Geography we will develop our knowledge and understanding of the United Kingdom. We will also be preparing and performing our own song as part of the Easter Service.

Our English lessons will be supported by some fantastic and engaging texts, including The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Beowulf and The Invention of Hugo Cabret. These stories will inspire our reading, writing and discussion throughout the year.

We are also looking forward to a range of exciting experiences beyond the classroom. These include a trip to Manchester’s Jewish Museum, a visit from the Wonderdome Planetarium to enhance our learning in Science, and an exciting Anglo-Saxon workshop. We will also welcome regular visitors into school who will help to bring our learning to life.

There are lots of additional experiences to look forward to throughout the year, including our Year 5 sleepover in the spring term and swimming in the autumn term. We are sure these will create some wonderful memories for the children.

Home Learning

A home learning task or project will be sent home each half term. We encourage all children to:

• Read regularly, ideally every day.
• Continue to practise their times tables.
• Engage with online learning activities, which may include DreamBox Maths and Literacy Gold.

PE

Our PE days will change throughout the year, so please ensure that your child's indoor and outdoor PE kit is kept in school. We also ask that all PE kit and school uniform is clearly labelled.

We are very much looking forward to an exciting year together in Year 5. We can't wait to learn, explore and make lots of wonderful memories with the children in Chestnut Class!
