Chestnut Class

Decimals

This week, we enjoyed learning about decimals through ‘Now Press Play’ the children listened to a story and followed along with actions. After each chapter, they completed a tricky decimal task. The children thoroughly enjoyed this and one child said “This has helped me understand decimals. Can we do all of our lessons like this?”

Subtracting Fractions

This week in maths, we have been looking at subtracting fractions crossing the wholes. I am so proud of the children and their resilience. It has not been an easy task but the children absolutely smashed it. Well done everyone.

Christmas Themed Maths Day

On the 1st December, we focused our whole day around Maths.

Our first activity, we were given information about different children and their likes and dislikes. We were then given a budget and had to put together a list of presents, using the Smyths catalogue.

For the second activity, we created a continuous line graph plotting the distance Santa travelled in a 6 hour timeframe.

We then went out on to the yard and hunted for clues (solving tricky maths problems) to find the secret song title.

Numbers up to 1 Million!

In Maths this week, we have been looking at numbers up to 1 million the children enjoyed using the place value counters to make the number and identify the value of each one. Don’t worry Mrs Smith, the tables are now spotless!

Higher Value Numbers

This week we started looking at higher value numbers. We used base 10 and place value counters to help us visualise the numbers and physically move them around.

We then tried partitioning the numbers using the part whole model for numbers to 10,000. Next step is numbers to 100,000 and all the way up to 1,000,000.

Ordering numbers to 100,000

Last week we looked at ordering larger numbers in ascending order.
